The Friends of Nursery Row Park work to protect and enhance the park. Parts of the park were zoned for housing in the 2004 Southwark Plan. In 2010 active plans to use parts of the park for housing were cancelled – but the zoning remains and as long as this continues the park is under threat.

As part of a programme to demolish the Heygate Estate, the council planned to build on the Community Orchard and Brandon Street sites of the park. This had been planned from 2002, but only announced in 2007.
While the number of flats this would have provided was not big, the impact on the park would have been massive – it would have become invisible from the street on three sides as these indicative plans show:
