Park Under Threat

The Friends of Nursery Row Park work to protect and enhance the park. Parts of the park were zoned for housing in the 2004 Southwark Plan. In 2010 active plans to use parts of the park for housing were cancelled – but the zoning remains and as long as this continues the park is under threat.

Nursery Row Park fought for its survival for three long years from 2007

As part of a programme to demolish the Heygate Estate, the council planned to  build on the Community Orchard and Brandon Street sites of the park. This had been planned from 2002, but only announced in 2007.

While the number of flats this would have provided was not big, the impact on the park would have been massive – it would have become invisible from the street on three sides as these indicative plans show:

Councillors announced in June 2010 that plans had been cancelled and other housing sites had been found.
